Policy Statement

Wireless Access Points

Information, Technology & Consulting (ITC) provides a campus-wide wireless service for use by Dartmouth faculty, students, and staff. Wireless access is also available to the public at large through the use of the Dartmouth Public SSID. Since wireless is provided centrally by ITC, the installation of private wireless access points (APs) is not allowed on campus. Personal or departmental APs can and do interfere with the College's centrally provided wireless network system. ITC will take steps to shut down any network access provided by personal wireless APs.

Personal Routers and Switches

ITC provides a campus-wide wired network service for use by Dartmouth faculty, students, and staff; however, an end user may occasionally need to provide a router or network switch to expand the available access ports to the network for their needs. Users providing expanded access ports through switches, routers, or hubs are responsible for all networking activities that originate from their equipment. If a user provides access ports to the network and illegal activities originate from any of the end-users access ports, the user providing the access ports may be fully responsible for any and all activities that originate from their equipment.

Personal or departmental routers, access switches, or hubs can interfere with the College's centrally-provided wired network system. ITC will take steps to shut down network access provided by personal equipment when that equipment has been deemed to be interfering with the College's network.
