Display of Objects on Campus Grounds

Summary of Policy

This policy establishes the lawn in front of Dartmouth Hall as a designated display area and outlines rules for displaying Objects on Campus Grounds.

Reason for Policy

To provide rules for displaying Objects on Campus Grounds that use the display space appropriately and safely, prevent damage to Dartmouth property, and reduce unnecessary use of Dartmouth resources.

Policy Statement

The lawn in front of Dartmouth Hall has been designated as the display area for Objects, including but not limited to flags, banners, and signs, on Campus Grounds. Campus Grounds are Dartmouth-owned outdoor spaces managed by the Conferences and Events office. Read the Use of Campus Grounds policy for more details on Campus Grounds.

Displaying Objects on the lawn in front of Dartmouth Hall is allowed with prior approval from the Conferences and Events office as detailed in procedures of this policy. Requests to display Objects in a different location may be submitted to the Conferences and Events office. Displaying Objects on Campus Grounds without prior approval from the Conferences and Events office is prohibited.

Procedures

To display Objects on Campus Grounds, a sponsoring organization or department must submit a request in writing to the Conferences and Events office at least five days in advance of installation of the proposed display. The written request must include the:

  • Sponsoring organization or department;
  • Main contact;
  • General description of the display;
  • Dimensions of the display;
  • Signage explaining the display;
  • Dartmouth activity the display relates to; and
  • Proposed time for the display, not exceeding sunrise to sunset for one day.

The sponsoring organization or department shall bear any costs for set-up, clean-up, and repairs of damage.

Review of requests for display include, but are not limited to, the adequacy of structural support for the Objects, potential interference with Dartmouth operations, number of Objects on display, compliance with Dartmouth policies, and compliance with Town of Hanover Zoning Ordinances and/other other regulations.

When reviewing requests, the Conferences and Events office will consult with additional Dartmouth representatives as necessary. Final approval of requests to display Objects is in the sole discretion of the Conference and Events office.

Ramifications

Facilities Operations & Management employees are instructed to remove all improperly posted materials from Dartmouth grounds, buildings, and facilities.
